Benefits of Priming Before Painting

When having your home painted, an important step that is often missed is the priming of your walls before paint application. Even when using a high quality, long-lasting paint, primer offers significant benefits to exterior painting. When searching for a professional to paint the exterior of your residence or building, they should insist on using a layer of primer before they initiate the painting process.

As the undercoat to paint that goes on a surface, primer acts as a sealant for the exterior painting area. Especially when painting a surface for the first time, the paint would soak right in to the wall if there was no primer on sealing the area. Even if there is a layer of paint that will be gone over, new paint will not always want to stick to it so adding primer will ensure that everything stays where it should and goes on evenly.

Cracks and holes in the wall and areas that need touch up dry wall or stucco should also be primed before painting. Even if these are very small areas, if they are not primed, the paint could either refuse to stick, or simply soak into the wall causing a faded or washed out appearance. You could find the new areas that have been painted will look older or not as bright as other areas that were properly primed before applying paint.

Primer also protects the surface it is being applied to. Paint does not necessarily offer protection from the elements and can become chipped easily on exterior paint surfaces. Primer will ensure those areas are still being protected even when the paint comes off.

Primer protects the surface under the paint and also increases the longevity of the paint itself. It allows the paint to stick and not soak into the wall increasing the durability of the paint. Exterior painting projects can often be exposed to harsh elements. Make sure your building or home and paint are protected by having professionals prime the area before applying paint.
